Note that the more accurate your measurements are, the more accurate the result will be.   Convert the fractions to decimal by dividing the top number by the bottom number and appending to the integer inch value (for example 36 1/8 inch = 36.125 inches).

 

Use the formula below to calculate the angle exactly. 

 

Hill Angle = 180 ÷ π X Inverse Cosine (String Length ÷ Ground Length) 

 

Note that π = 3.14159

 

or,

 

Hill Angle = 57.2957 X COS-1(String Length ÷ Ground Length)

 

If you have a Microsoft Windows PC, click Start, Programs, Accessories, Calculator.  Enter the String Length, divide symbol (/), Ground Length and equal symbol (=).  Then click the Inv check box and COS.  The click the multiply symbol (*) and 57.2957.  The angle will be calculated.
